Juice Fast Day 1

So, if you didn’t get the drift the last 3 days, it was TOUGH to have self control and not eat whatever I wanted to eat, as I prepared for my fast. The actual juice fast didn’t start until today. What would be the harm in eating a steak dinner 2 days before I start the fast right? Well, glad I didn’t and I’m VERY glad I restrained myself for the 3 days prior – it made an INCREDIBLE difference for today. I was WAY more mentally prepared to start today. Seriously. I can’t stress it enough. Since it has been 3 days since I ate what I wanted, going straight into the juicing just seemed natural.

So this is my fancy new juicer. Yes, yes, I bought the brand that was used in the documentary “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dying.” THAT movie was the one that really got me thinking about trying this. I watched it about 2 months ago and have been talking about it ever since.

All the fruits and veggies for maybe a week? I’m not even sure yet how long this will last me.

Now, the actual juicing process and getting something tasty out of it…well that is a different story.

Gross.

Bleh.

Ugh.

I made some pretty potent juices today. Won’t make those mistakes again.

My stomach is churning just a bit thinking about what I had to force myself to drink.

Get this. I even plugged my nose on one of them.

All of mine ended up bitter today.

So, here is what I made today and changes I would make in the future:

Breakfast: 4 cups green Juice
6 Kale Leaves
1 Cucumber (maybe half a cucumber or not at all)
4 Celery Stalks
2 Green Apples
1/2 Lemon (peel the lemon first)
1 piece of ginger (itty bitty piece)

Lunch: 4 cups of fruit Juice Not as tasty as it sounds.
1/2 of a pineapple
1/2 of a mini watermelon (buy watermelon a week early so that it is tasty and ripe come juice time)
1 mango
add 1 stalk celery (for sodium requirement)
add 1 handful spinach (for green requirement)

Afternoon snack: 4 cups fruit juice
3 oranges
1 apple
3 carrots

Didn’t even have this snack today – I wasn’t hungry.

Dinner: 4 cups green juice
2 large handfuls spinach leaves
1 stalk celery
1 cucumber (ugh. WHY didn’t I look at my notes above? Maybe not use a cucumber)
1 pear (I used a handful of grapes because I didn’t have a pear)
1/2 cup blueberries
1/4 lemon – yuck.
Added 4 carrots to the mix

The last one COULD have been good but I added a cucumber at the end and COMPLETELY ruined it.

Towards the end of the day, I was encouraged to actually taste the juice as I was in the middle of juicing so I could add different tastes in case it was too bitter or too sweet or what not. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. duh.

I am a little concerned that I was only able to drink 6 cups of juice today instead of the recommended 16 cups. I just couldn’t stomach anymore. I mean, drinking 4 CUPS of something in one sitting is A LOT but try drinking 4 cups of something NASTY in one sitting. My goal will probably be to add 2-4 more cups during the day and be ok with 8-10 cups a day. I’m not sure where, but maybe if I can get some juices that are delicious, I won’t have a problem.

As I was researching options for a juicing program, my friend mentioned a program she did last year and so I looked into it and felt it was a good fit. I needed a professional plan from somebody so that I don’t accidentally kill myself by juice.

I am doing a 10 Day Juice Fasting Program through Radiance Central . There are great resources available through the forum. daily videos, tips, recipes. I am able to talk to the other people doing the fast and also talk to the expert Natasha who almost coaches us through the 10 days.

My starting weight was 182 pounds on October 6th when I started to prepare for my fast. Technically I’ve lost 3 pounds and today was just the first “real” day. Ha. Sweet.

To keep things simple though, I am going to start my actual juice fast weight timeline today at 179.4 pounds.

I had a PERFECT day today as a diabetic – and perfect to me is keeping my blood sugars low and not allow them to spike all over the place. I am happy to say that today, my blood sugars averaged about 85 and I only rose slightly to 120 after my dinner juice and now I’m back down again to 85. Perfect. Again, I’ve been able to keep my insulin usage down to over half of what I was taking last week per day.

You might remember when I got my CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor). Using it during this fast is AMAZING and I am able to download the data from my CGM to my computer and see trends or patterns. Here is just a visual look at my insulin levels over the past 2 weeks. They are COMING DOWN!

Did you notice that I have PICTURES???!!!! This past weekend we were surprised by a blog reader who gave us a camera!!!! I would thank them personally on the blog but I’m gonna imagine that person wants to remain anonymous…so THANK YOU to the person who gave us a camera. It was VERY generous of you! Awesomeness.
